The world famous opera theater “Vienna State Opera”. It’s also famous for its expensive tickets, but do you know that in the summer there is a huge monitor outside the Opera House where you can watch live performances for free?
I would like to report on this live broadcast that started about 10 years ago.

huge monitor at the opera house
Live coverage of the Vienna Staatsoper is held at a plaza on the Kelntner Street side of the opera house. This time I visited around 8 o’clock at night, and there were a lot of people.
This huge monitor is located on the wall of the opera house. The size is said to be 50 m2, which is about 440 inches in inches. At that time, Weber’s “demon shooter” was being broadcast live.
There is a chair in front of the monitor so anyone can sit on it. However, there are many people who can’t sit down, and there are many people who sit in the standing room or on the ground, and there are even the figures of middle-aged men lying down watching!
Full-fledged camera angle video
I watched it here for a while, and the image is very clear, and the camera angle changes frequently, so it’s quite authentic! According to the report, the live broadcast was shot by five cameras from various angles.
When you’re solo, the singer zooms in, so you can always see it from an ideal angle, which might be better than going in and sitting in a cheap seat.
There are a total of 180 seats. It looks like a plastic bench with a narrow seat pitch, but there seems to be a lot of competition for sitting. …。
Which is cheaper, to enter with a cheap ticket?
For your information, regarding the performance ticket held in Vienna Staatsoper, “demon shooter” which was held on this day was the first performance of the opera, so the cheapest ticket is €49!
Even the seats on the top floor and the last row where you can hardly see the stage cost more than 6,000 yen, so it might be cheaper to watch the video from this free seat (The most expensive seat costs €273!).
However, if you want to enjoy the atmosphere of the Opera House such as the beautiful foyer, I recommend the ballet, not the opera, because the ticket price is cheap! In the case of 2018, the cheapest performance starts from €per digit.
Only available in summer
The live broadcast of Staatsoper is not held all year round, but only during the performances from April to September (excluding July and August in the off-season) and during the year-end and New Year holidays “Die Fledermaus”. It is not held in winter, so you need to be careful.
180 seats will be full soon, so if you want to watch this public viewing, I recommend you to come early (If possible, from more than an hour ago) and get a seat!
Still, this monitor is a little strange for historical buildings like the Opera House, isn’t it? …。 Can’t we at least put it on the side of Kelntner Street? …?
